Bonnie Scotland

The ultimate destination and dream was always Scotland and today we got there!

The trip from Redcar to the border was mostly highway but we did spot some castles along the way. The border sign, if I’m honest, was underwhelming but I was so very happy to see it! I had hoped for a sign we could park the vans and take a snap, but oh well…

Yes that is blue sky in Scotland!

We ventured into the first Supermarket we could find, Tesco, to top up supplies and then found ourselves in Dumfries where we hunted down a Mother’s Day Sunday roast. It was not Mother’s Day in Scotland but Tanya and I were getting spoiled nonetheless!

After a failed first attempt, the second place, Caven Arms, came through with the goods! We ordered a platter to share which included our first try of Haggis. Not going to lie, I was a little worried but found this deep fried battered sausage like delicacy rather tasty. ✅️ I will try it again to see if we lucked out or I actually do like it. Main meal of roast corned beef with steamed vegetables, potatoes cooked two ways, rich gravy and best of all Yorkshire Pudding hit the spot!  I had my first whisky in Scotland with a ginger beer chaser. What a great Mother’s Day. Only thing that would have made it better was to have my daughters join me, but alas not this time!

Onwards to our camp ground at Castle Cary. Skirting the coast line through many sheep farms until we saw the castle in the distance. Our days driving had come to an end and our trusty drivers were pleased to hang up the keys.

The castle was a ruin, not one we could walk around but for our first night in Scotland it met the brief. A castle ✅️ A bar, The Lairds Inn ✅️ Power to recharge Big Bertha ✅️ Clean facilities ✅️

We soon found ourselves exhausted and settled in for an early night.

Tip #5 Google Maps has been pretty accurate with driving times, so when planning a road trip you can more less rely on these predictions between stops. We have been working on roughly 3hrs between stops and that is more than enough for our drivers.
