After a family Christmas spent in Emerald we decided to break up the 9hr journey home with a couple nights spent at Tannum Sands.
Tannum Sands is just south of Gladstone on the east coast of Queensland. It has all the usual facilities of a coastal town with grocery stores, restaurants and a surf club. We stayed at the caravan park which sits opposite the estuary which separates the mainland from an island called Wild Cattle Island. We booked on a whim so there was only unpowered sites left which was fine by us. Our solar panels keep us charged easily.

These sites where to the back of the park among paperback trees with a back drop of forest. It was shady, had a good breeze and suited travelling with grandparents, nieces, our youngest daughter and two dogs. We like our own space and had plenty of it here.
The facilities were well maintained, clean and everyone was pleased with the hot shower with good water pressure. This is not always in a given in busy caravan parks!
A short walk from the camp site is the creek that flows out to open ocean. There is a patrolled beach just around the corner from the mouth of the creek. It is a picturesque walk on the beach but also on the foreshore which has a lovely park with picnic table, playground and BBQs. Plenty of space here but it is a no dog zone so we didn’t spend anytime in the park just sneaking through with two groodles in tow attracting their usual attention. Sneaking is not their strong suit!

It was only a short stay and on the second night we decided dinner out was the go. The surf club was the intended venue but unfortunately it was closed. With two 9 year olds with us, we looked for somewhere else child friendly and settled on the Tannum Sands Hotel bistro. Can’t say the food was amazing, but the kids had fun on the jumping castle and playground.
Even though we didn’t spend lots of time here, we certainly would recommend the caravan park and the area in general. If the opportunity arises again, we would visit again. Happy travels here and a great stop to break up the drive home.
