Beachfest – where the toys shine

My husband Wayne has always had toys. You know, the kind that he dreamt about as a little kid, fast cars, motor bikes, mountain bikes and four wheel drives.

We have a deal, he can have his toys as long as he uses them and I don’t need to have my own toys because I would rather spend $$ on travel.

This week travel and toys came together at the Caloundra Downunder Beachfest. We got a short stay away and he got to show off his 1984 XE Falcon Wagon. Win win right?

Right! We stayed in a two bedroom unit on the Esplanade at Bulcock Beach overlooking the mouth of the river and in the distance, the glasshouse mountains. The unit was dated but the views were spectacular. From the car show point of view, you couldn’t get a better vantage point. As any rev head knows, driving laps in your car is just what you do. The streets of Caloundra echoed the sounds of hotted up engines and drivers letting everyone know they were there. We had a birds eye view of the constant flow of beautiful cars showing off.

As I said the unit was dated but it was not uncomfortable. It had everything we needed. Two queen beds, 1 bathroom, 2 toilets, washing machine, dryer, full lounge and kitchen. No WIFI, so working from here meant I brought my own. The deck overlooked the street and beach below. This is a BYO bedding booking, so needed to remember that but if not, you can rent linen.

I worked on and off the 3 days during the week we were here and you couldn’t have had a better office outlook. The rest of the time was spent cruising in the cars, admiring the cars and listening to the streets of Caloundra come alive with the sound of rumbling engines! I’m sure there are some locals who would be glad it is all over, but in a post-covid world the event was really well attended. Over 500 cars on display (I think Wayne found car number 537) and the streets were a buzz of people appreciating and being in awe of the dedication to keep these vehicles on the road. The influx of visitors must have been a welcome reprieve from the hit that tourism took in covid times.

We wound up our stay with breakfast with friends and a stroll through the Sunday markets. We have rebooked for next year and would recommend to anyone with an appreciation for classic street cars to make the trip.
